Portraits

Wed Jun 28, 2006, 3:38 AM

Lately I've been considering creating a little side business of
making digital portraits for people using pictures of their friends
or family.  I know everyone out there has a favorite photo of a
friend or loved one that could use a little fixing up artistically.
And obviously I have an interest in the subject of people.

Here's an example of what I mean...

What do you think?  Is there some potential here?

I'd go for your idea. It'd be cool to get a pained-like version of my husband's and my first photograph together :aww:

I think its a good idea but may be a bit hard to get started, most peopel tend to prefer realistic photograph like portraits to artistic, but thats not to say artistic people won't like.
Give it a shot I say.

The trick will definitely be finding the target audience for this. If I wanted to go all out I could do some art exhibits and build a separate website but I'm already busy enough with two jobs so I'd prefer to only get a client every once and a while.

dA is probably a good place to do that, if you can get popular enough you can easily get commissions. Quite few artists could live off here. Good luck with it, I reckon you'll get it and it'll turn out great in the end.

Most definatly. In fact, I know of some people who auction thier servies on Ebay for such! (search for "unique gift art") Another good thing to do is local advertising. People looking for gifts and such will really like this idea. Figure out your costs, and balence that amount with how much people are willing to pay in your area. Do a few free or reduced portriats for friends and family to get a portfolio and word of mouth...don't give up!!

That's all good advice, thanks. I was thinking of charging around $100 to $200 per image, depending on the size and style needed. How much do the people you know charge?
