Photo Manipulation

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 12, 2009, 5:02 PM
As most digital artist's know, the books produced by Ballistic Publishing (Expose, Exotique, etc...) are known to be very high quality featuring only the best art of the year.  I have submitted my artwork a few times and a number of those images were added to the short list for the final round.  In the end they were not selected but this latest time, after getting a short list notice for 2 images, they asked about my process and I told them how my work is always based off of an original photo.  That was the last I heard from them and I can only assume that the reason why my work was not selected was because of my process.
They can certainly pick whatever images they want but it seems like the process of how my artwork was created is more important to them than simply its style and beauty.

Oddly enough, one of those images is about to be featured by another (bigger) publication.  More on that soon.

...and another big project is in the works so stay tuned!

Hmmm well they're really missing out not having you in their books. I love your workd. I'm no expert in digital art, but the images in those books appear to be constructed digitally from start to finish. Maybe they are hung up photomanipulation methods in general. I guess at least it's that and not because your work isn't up to scratch. Really frustrating though, sorry to hear :(

Perhaps for your future work you could take the Photographs yourself? this way you are in all ways responsible for every aspect of the image??

But other than that, I don't see why they turned you down :/

I know of quite a few artists at your level who use "Reference" or some sort of Base that started the idea for the image.

But oh well, you learned something new....life goes on..

Ohh yeh, keep up the good work :3

most of my work is derived from my own photographs including one of the two that were shortlisted here and I've seen other work in the books that used images i've seen from istockphoto.com

I don't know

Ahh, I see, then you are in all ways responsible for every aspect of your artwork.

That is really lame that they did not select your work, It will be interesting to see the artists that they actually do select.

Oh well...

I saw the Advanced Photoshop Cover, Just rub that in there faces, haha, thats bound to gather more interest in your work.

Later..

in the beginning, they had some issues with artists not crediting stock -or referencing / other involving artists -sure that this cause problems.

usually when your work differs enough and credits are properly given, this should be no subject for rejection.

i also had 2 pieces shortlisted, one with another artist, one with 3d- references -until now i had´nt heard anything back- i suppose its just the amount of good artworks making it into the competition lately, remember -there´s always someone who´s better than you;-)

They should be so glad that you are honest and they should explain to you why you are not picked each time. How rude :-(. I really like your work.

You know…this might seem childish, but when your get featured in the bigger publication…you should mail it to those who rejected you:shrug: Just a little suggestion:)
I still find it very hard to believe they would reject you Michael… How could anyone reject such beautiful works and amazing concepts. To me it shouldnt matter that your work is based on photos. What you turn those photos into…:faint:…that is what should really should stick out ya know?
