This is two time Olympic gold medalist in fencing, Mariel Zagunis. She was the first American to win a gold medal in fencing in over 100 years and for that statistic she was given the honor of carrying the flag for Team USA into the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. That put her pretty high on my list of athletes I wanted to work with so when i got the ok from her agent, i was on the next plane up to Portland Oregon to photograph her.
The flag was shot separately and it took a serious amount of warping to get it into that shape. We shot indoors so her skirt wasn't flying like this either. So, yes, i had a similar dress lying around (from the Marylin Monroe shoot) and i put it on, set the timer and spun around in my living room until i got the look i needed. :/ Luckily, I had the blinds closed that day!
The whole composition is brilliant and the way you rendered the golden parts just blows me away..! Superb work indeed!
