I began with this reference photo which I took in Moscow a few months ago.

Obviously, I had a specific concept in mind when I took this photo. The idea was to create a robot out of her and the pen would actually be a screwdriver which is how the cyborg changed her eye color. I liked the direction at first so I began to paint.

Later, I decided that the composition was off balance with her hand not being enough to support the left side of the image. Without scrapping the whole image, I decided to crop it to just the head but now I was forced to think of a new concept. I asked a friend of mine what I should do and she suggested that I make her into a matryoshka doll, which is a Russian doll set that stacks inside of each other I'm sure you've seen. I liked the idea but I wanted a better twist to it so I split her head vertically to see how it looked.

it looks more like an eggshell falling away here, and i thought the vertical split looked a bit sloppy, but i looked at the finished Skin Deep, and it looks better as torn fabric. Beautiful work though.
